Youth Services

Alutiiq provides Education and Training Services to various Department of Labor Job Corp facilities or campuses. More than 75 percent of those who enroll in Job Corps become employed, obtain further training or participate in higher education, or join the military becoming productive, self-sufficient members of society.

Alutiiq operates the Flint/Genesee Job Corps Center, and partners with ResCare Inc. in the operation of three other Job Corps Centers, Northland, Tulsa and Treasure Island. In addition, Alutiiq operates the Outreach and Admissions and Career Transition Services (Placement) in the state of New Jersey and in New York City for 2,750 arrivals and is responsible for placing over 400 completed students annually. Alutiiq is also responsible for 429 student arrivals in Oklahoma as part of a sub contract with ResCare in the operation of the Tulsa Job Corps Center.

Job Corps is the nation’s oldest residential, educational and training program for young adults. Originally formed in 1964 under the Office of Economic Opportunity, it has successfully trained more than 2.0 million young people. Job corps is divided into six regions, each made up of several states. There are more than 120 campuses nationwide, including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Job is operated as a public-private partnership. The government provides facilities and equipment for the Centers. Private companies, and several other federal agencies such as the U.S. Forest Service, Parks Service, Bureau of Reclamation and Fish and Wildlife, contract with the Department of Labor to operate the Centers, recruit young men and women and provide job placement services.

A unique approach, integrating academic, vocational and social skills training in a residential program, is employed. This gives young people a chance to change their lives and obtain realistic work experience and life skills. Active employer involvement in center training is also key to ensuring that students receive the work-related training needed to become competitive in the marketplace.
